Pōhutukawa
Pōhutukawa Journeys;
i.
the wayshower tree, heart healer, guardian through deaths doorway to Hine-nui-te-pō, atua of the underworld, helping deceased spirits navigate from this world to the next.

Meditating at the Coromandel foreshore, Pōhutukawa in full red bloom beneath the raumati sun. I lay beneath the many rakau here, gazing up into its layered branches. Slowing and deepening my breathing, I slip between realms and into its reaches - where the liminal of the tree’s essence meets with the now, in physical. My gaze rests at the closest branch and I feel its auric field meet with mine, each breath takes me deeper and soon I am in the upper branches closer to the sky, noticing the way the light pours through the leaves. I hear the sounds of a spoken karakia, entering into my own journey with this rakau and what it has to teach me.
When I return to my body at the oceans edge, beneath the Pōhutukawa tree, I am both awed and emotional. I return each day, and when I am no longer able to meet with the tree, I make an essence from its flowers to continue the journey, which tastes sweet, even now. This essence differs deeply from the tincture I was journeying with a few months ago after a year of grief processing multiple deaths, shock and loss.
This essence creates a new pathway for me, one that carries the energy of Summer, and love.

This rakau came down during a storm in Piha many years ago, transforming the land into something new. As I carved it, I could catch moments of its oceanic scent, seeing the place where it grew near the sea.
As I carved this Pōhutukawa I was thrown fully, deeply into the realm of Hine-nui-te-pō, the embodied grief and memories of all those who have passed on recently move through me; I allow this process to simply be, another layer of the gifts of Pōhutukawa.
——
iv.
There is always my own journey, and then there is yours. What will Pōhutukawa reveal to you, how will you journey together, is there a medicine here for you and your heart?
